Project DescriptionThe Australian Government has committed $500 million to upgrade South Road in Adelaide, South Australia. The Australian Government has committed funding to both planning studies and package works to deliver the first stage of a non-stop, north-south motorway between Port River Expressway and the Southern Expressway along South Road. The project involves the upgrade of South Road between the Port River Expressway at Wingfield in the north and its connection to the Southern Expressway at Darlington in the south. The project will deliver a non-stop link between the Port River Expressway and Regency Road. At the southern end of South Road, the project will allow work to commence on the grade separation of the South Road and Sturt Road intersection at Darlington. South Road is a strategically important north-south route through the Adelaide metropolitan area. It provides connections to the major intermodal transport hubs of Adelaide Airport, Port Adelaide, Outer Harbour and the Islington Rail Terminal, as well as providing access to the bulk of Adelaide’s industrial activity in the north-west and education and medical facilities in the south. The South Road Superway, between Port River Expressway and Regency Road, is the first project to commence construction on South Road. BenefitsThe project will improve traffic flows for both freight and commuter traffic along this strategically important route. It will also improve road safety and deliver environmental benefits by reducing stop-start travel. FundingThe Australian Government has committed $430 million to the project, as part of its $500 million commitment towards the upgrade of South Road in partnership with the South Australian Government. TimetableThe South Road Superway commenced in April 2010 on local road works, with major works commencing in early 2011 on the South Road Superway. Completion is expected to be completed by end of 2013. The timing for commencement of construction for the remaining elements is yet to be finalised. |
