Project Description

This project will deliver sealed roads, gravel road and improving creek crossings to remote communities in Cape York, such as the Lockhart River Community Access Road upgrade.

Six roads have been identified under the program including:

Benefits

The benefits of this project are:

  • A reduction in the frequency and length of the periodic road closures which isolate indigenous communities and through traffic;
    a reduction in transport operation costs;
  • improvement of road conditions and regional access through upgraded construction to a sealed standard;
  • the safe operation of transport vehicles within a traffic stream dominated by local indigenous and tourist vehicles; and
  • consistent driving conditions, through improved stream crossings, dust elimination, better road alignment and improved visibility.

Funding

The Australian Government has committed $10.5 million to the project, in partnership with the Queensland Government.

Timetable

The Works commenced on the first of the projects, Lockhart River Community Access Road, mid 2009.  The remaining works will be carried out progressively to 2012.
