Project DescriptionThe study explored possible options for increasing the efficiency and capacity of the freight rail network leading into and through Adelaide. These possible options ranged from upgrading the existing alignment through to considering alignments to the north and south of Adelaide. BenefitsThe study informed governments and industry on ways to potentially improve the competitiveness of rail while minimising the impact on the community. Given the potential significant capital cost, an extensive consultation process was undertaken. FundingFunding of $3 million was allocated to this project. TimetableThe study commenced in January 2009 and was completed in June 2010. Project Reference GroupA Project Reference Group (PRG) was established to provide input from and engage with key stakeholders. The PRG membership consisted of: - Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure;
- Australian Rail Track Corporation;
- Freight Rail Operators Group;
- Local Government Association of South Australia;
- The City of Onkaparinga
- The Barossa Council;
- The City of Mitcham;
- The District Council of Mallala;
- The District Council of Mount Barker;
- The Murray & Mallee Local Government Association; and
- The Rural City of Murray Bridge.
Call for SubmissionsSubmissions closed on the 20 November 2009. In particular, comment was invited against the options posed in the Discussion Paper. A total of 76 submissions were received from local governments, rail operators, industry associations and other interested individuals. All submissions were considered by the consultants, GHD, in advance of the final report going to the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government.
