Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program
The Boom Gates for Rail Crossings Program is part the Nation Building Program which will deliver and maintain vital road and rail infrastructure in every region of Australia.
The Boom Gates for Rail Crossings program objective is to provide funding for the installation of boom gates and other active safety measures at some 300 high risk rail crossings across Australia. Under this program, the Australian Government is providing $150 million to States and the Northern Territory over 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Recent serious accidents at rail crossings across Australia have highlighted the need for action to address the risks faced by road and rail users at these intersections. Tragically there are around 100 accidents at level crossings around Australia every year.
There are over 11,900 level crossings across Australia. Around 25% of these have active protection measures such as boom gates, flashing lights and bells.
The upgrade of rail level crossings across Australia will improve safety for road users, train drivers and pedestrians.
Projects
The projects allocated funding were identified by the each State and Territory Government using the Australian Level crossing assessment model (ALCAM) that takes into account factors such as road and rail traffic volumes, crash history, visibility for motorists and train drivers, the number of rail tracks at the crossing and other public risks.
Details of the approved projects by States and Territory can be found on the links below.
